Intent
At Castor C of E Primary School, our teaching of Personal, Social and Health Education enables our children to become confident, independent, healthy and responsible members of society. We aim to develop the whole child intellectually, morally, socially and spiritually, ensuring that they are equipped with the knowledge, skills and attributes they need for life now and in the future.
Our PSHE curriculum is underpinned by our vision and values, supporting children to flourish within a caring, inclusive and respectful school community. We believe that PSHE plays a vital role in helping pupils to understand themselves and others, develop positive relationships, and make safe, informed choices.
We follow the Jigsaw PSHE scheme, a comprehensive and progressive programme which supports children’s emotional literacy, mental health and personal development from Early Years to Year 6. Jigsaw provides a consistent structure across the school, ensuring full coverage of the statutory Relationships, Health and Sex Education (RSE) requirements.
At Castor C of E Primary School, we place great importance on pupil voice. Children are encouraged to share their views, take responsibility and actively contribute to decision-making within school life. We also support well-being through a range of approaches, including mindfulness, reflection and opportunities for children to express themselves safely and confidently.
In Early Years, PSHE is delivered through the Personal, Social and Emotional Development strand of the Early Years Foundation Stage framework, alongside the Jigsaw Early Years materials, ensuring strong foundations are built for future learning.
Implementation
PSHE at Castor C of E Primary School is delivered through the Jigsaw PSHE scheme from Nursery to Year 6, ensuring consistency, progression and full coverage of statutory requirements.
The curriculum is structured around six key puzzle pieces:
- Being Me in My World
- Celebrating Difference
- Dreams and Goals
- Healthy Me
- Relationships
- Changing Me
These units are taught in a spiral curriculum, meaning each theme is revisited each year with increasing depth and complexity.
PSHE is taught weekly and is supported by wider opportunities across school life, including:
- Collective worship and assemblies
- School council and pupil leadership roles
- Buddy systems and house activities
- Cross-curricular links with subjects such as RE, Science and Geography
- Opportunities for discussion linked to real-life and current events
Teaching is inclusive and adapted to meet the needs of all learners, ensuring every child can access the curriculum and succeed. Staff use a range of strategies to support emotional understanding, wellbeing and communication skills.
Assessment is ongoing and based on teacher observation, discussion and pupil reflection. This allows staff to monitor progress and ensure learning is embedded effectively over time.
