Castor Church of England Primary School

Physical Education

Intent

PE is experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is essential to ensure children attain optimum physical and emotional development and good health. We intend to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical education and in developing life skills. We want to teach children skills to keep them safe. Swimming is an important life skill, we aspire for all children to leave primary school being able to swim at least 25 metres.  We also want to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values. Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children, developing the knowledge, skills and competence to excel in a broad range of sports and physical activities.

Implementation

  • PE at Castor CE School provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including; invasion games, net & wall games, strike and field games, gymnastics, dance, swimming and outdoor & adventure.
  • Pupils participate in two high quality PE lessons each week, covering one sporting activity and one Get Set 4 PE lesson. In addition, children are encouraged to participate in the varied range of extra-curricular activities.
  • Teachers use, and adapt the Get Set 4 PE planning and resources to ensure lessons across years show progression.
  • Children are invited to attend competitive sporting events within the local area. This is an inclusive approach which encourages not only physical development but also mental well-being. These events also develop teamwork and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the children.
  • Each year a small group of Year 5 and Year 6 children are invited to become Sports Leaders for the school. They develop into sporting role models for the younger children, assisting with lunchtime clubs, our annual KS1 athletics and any other Sporting activities.
  • Children from Year 3 through to Year 6 attend swimming lessons to ensure they can swim to 25 metres.

Impact

We ensure that our PE curriculum is progressive and allows children to develop fundamental skills and apply them to a variety of sports and activities. All children are provided with the skills and given opportunities to demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best. Our pupils are physically active and this has positive implications on their learning in the classroom. Children understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of exercise.  We hope children enjoy PE and develop a love of sport, and physical activity, that they pursue outside of school and in future life outside primary school. All pupils understand the values and importance of fair play and being a good sportsperson. Year 6 pupils leave school with the skills to self-rescue in the water and swim 25 metres competently.
